Seventh stop: Ottawa, ON - stay 2 nights at the Fairmont Château Laurier
Today I’m driving from Kingston to Ottawa, a new place to discover. The distance was not much and the weather did its best, it was just a bit cloudy.
The first time I visited Eastern Canada, I slept very disrespectfully outside Ottawa, but now I thought it should happen..
And this is partly why I chose the Fairmont Hotel, a real classic, because the hotel is strategically located on the banks of the Rideau Canal and somewhat elevated it gives a beautiful view of Parliament Hill.

Some History.
For a long time Ottawa was the homeland of the Odawa tribe. They belonged to the Algonquin Indians, a group that claims never to occupy other territories by force. In 1983, the Odawa filed a claim with the national government to claim rights over the land that once belonged to them. The negotiations continue until today.
The first European to settle in the region in 1800 was Philemon White. He founded a large agricultural community on the Ottawa River and then focused on the timber trade. In 1812, this trade was larger than the fur trade, which in addition to fishing was among the first activities of European settlers.
After the War of 1812, between the US and the British ruler, the Canadian government stimulated migration from Ireland to the region around Ottawa. Together with workers from the neighboring province of Quebec, they worked in the timber trade and helped with the construction of the Rideau Canal.
After the completion of the canal in 1832 the population grew considerably.
In 1855 Ottawa became officially a city. When the English Queen Victoria decided two years later that a capital should be chosen for the then Province of Canada, the choice fell on Ottawa. Although Ottawa was not a metropole like Montréal or Toronto, it was a smart move. Ottawa was on the border between French Québec and the English Ontario, which promoted cooperation between these two areas, and the city was further from the American border than the big cities in Canada, which were therefore very vulnerable to raids from the South.
Finally, the Canadian government owned large plots of land around Ottawa, making it easy to place government buildings.
During the Second World War, Ottawa was the home of Princess Juliana and her children from the Netherlands, as a result of which the city still has a special bond with the Netherlands. Every year a large tulip festival takes place in the month of May. The Dutch royal family then sends 10,000 tulip bulbs to the city as a thank you for the accommodation of members of the royal family and for the Canadian help during the liberation of the Netherlands.
The highlights:
- Parliament Hill. The parliament hill in the Canadian capital is also called 'The Hill'. It is located in the city center on the Ottawa River. The complex consists of three buildings and state symbol for the nation of Canada. The 3 beautiful buildings are very impressive and also the Centennial Flame, the intention was to place it temporarily, completes the picture.

- Confederation Boulevard - many museums, government buildings, monuments and heritage sites connected to each other via the Confederation Boulevard. The boulevard is 7.5 kilometers long and carries you include Parliament Hill, Sussex Drive and Rideau Hill.
- The Rideau Canal is a waterway that connects the cities of Ottawa (from Ottawa River) and Kingston (Lake Ontario) connects. This contains the so-called Rideau Lockstations. And in the winter this channel is the longest skating rink (about 8km) in the world.

- Parc Jack-Cartier & Gatineau, the place of Winterlude takes place from 2-19 February.
- ByWard Market, home to 600 stores, restaurants and much more, so the beating heart of Ottawa's shoppers.
I found Ottawa a wonderfully relaxed city with lots of historic buildings, but it was a shame that there were so many of them in the scaffolding. What was noticed was the many police guards at Parliament Hill but probably also logical after the attack in 2014.
Strolling over Wellington Street you actually immediately catch the majority of the most important monuments.

The 3 buildings that represent Parliament Hill are very impressive, right next to it lies Confederation Building and next to Supreme Court of Canada. Opposite the parliament building is the Langevin Block which is the office of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

One of the best moments in Ottawa was discovering a beautiful bronze statue of Oscar Peterson while his music sounds from a few boxes.
Oscar Peterson (Montreal, August 15, 1925 - Toronto, December 23, 2007) was a brilliant jazz pianist.
Oscar Peterson is one of the artists, who brought me my love for jazz, partly because his music was often played by my father during my childhood.

Bistro Social, had lunch at Social which I highly recommend, great service outstanding food.
Restaurant / Winelounge Beckta, can highly recommend diner at Beckta, I went for the Winebar for diner as the official restaurant I found a bit stif.
Ottawa is definately a place to visit, maybe not as I did in the winter but may in the summer or autumn.

Vanuit Kingston op naar Ottawa, een nieuwe plek om te ontdekken.De afstand was niet groot en het weer deed zijn best, het was alleen wat bewolkt.
De eerste keer dat ik Oost Canada bezocht, heb ik heel oneerbiedig buiten Ottawa geslapen maar nu moest het er toch van komen vond ik.
En dit is mede de reden dat ik heb gekozen voor het Fairmont, het hotel ligt namelijk heel strategisch op de oever van het Rideau Canal en op een verhoging zodat je een prachtig uitzicht op Parliament Hill.
Stukje Geschiedenis.
Lange tijd was Ottawa het thuisland van de Odawa-stam. Zij behoorden tot de Algonquin-indianen, een groep die beweert nooit met geweld andere gebieden te hebben bezet. In 1983 dienden de Odawa een claim in bij de nationale overheid om rechten op te eisen over het land dat hen ooit toebehoorde. De onderhandelingen gaan door tot op de dag van vandaag.

Toen de Engelse Queen Victoria twee jaar later besloot dat er een hoofdstad gekozen moest worden voor de toenmalige Province of Canada, viel de keuze op Ottawa. Hoewel Ottawa geen metropool was zoals Montréal of Toronto, was het een slimme zet. Ottawa lag op de grens tussen het Franse Québec en het Engelse Ontario, wat een samenwerking tussen deze twee gebieden bevorderde, en de stad lag verder van de Amerikaanse grens dan de grote steden in Canada, die daardoor erg kwetsbaar waren voor invallen vanuit het Zuiden. Ten slotte bezat de Canadese overheid grote stukken land rondom Ottawa, waardoor er gemakkelijk overheidsgebouwen geplaatst konden worden.
Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog was Ottawa de woonplaats van prinses Juliana en haar kinderen, waardoor de stad nog steeds een speciale band met Nederland heeft. Elk jaar vindt er in de maand mei een groot tulpenfestival plaats. Het Nederlandse koningshuis stuurt dan 10.000 tulpenbollen naar de stad als dankgebaar voor de huisvesting van leden van de koninklijke familie en voor de Canadese hulp tijdens de bevrijding van Nederland.
De hoogtepunten:
- Parliament Hill. De parlementsheuvel in de Canadese hoofdstad wordt ook wel 'The Hill' genoemd. Het ligt in het stadscentrum aan de Ottawa-rivier. Het complex bestaat uit drie gebouwen en staat symbool voor de natie Canada. De 3 prachtige gebouwen zijn zeer indrukwekkend en ook de Centennial Flame, eigenlijk was de bedoeling dit tijdelijk te plaatsen, maakt de het plaatje compleet.
- Confederation Boulevard - veel musea, overheidsgebouwen, monumenten en erfgoed-plaatsen met elkaar verbonden via de Confederation Boulevard. De boulevard is 7,5 kilometer lang en voert je onder andere langs Parliament Hill, Sussex Drive en Rideau Hill.
- Het Rideau Kanaal is een waterweg die de steden Ottawa (vanaf Ottawa Rivier) en Kingston (Lake Ontario) met elkaar verbindt. Hierin bevinden zich de zogenaamde Rideau Lockstations.In dit kanaal bevindt zich ‘s winters de langste schaatsbaan (ongeveer 8km) ter wereld.
- Parc Jack-Cartier & Gatineau, de plek van de Winterlude plaats vindt van 2-19 februari.
- ByWard Market, thuis van 600 winkels, restaurants en nog veelmeer, dus het kloppende hart van Ottawa’s winkelend publiek.
Ik vond Ottawa een heerlijk relaxte stad met heel veel historische gebouwen, alleen jammer dat er zoveel van in de steigers stonden. Wat op viel was de vele politie bewaking bij Parliament Hill maar waarschijnlijk ook wel logisch na de aanslag in 2014.
Slenterend over Wellington Street heb je eigenlijk meteen het grootste gedeelte van de belangrijkste monumenten te pakken. De 3 gebouwen die Parliament Hill vertegenwoordigen zijn zeer indrukwekkend, er direct naast ligt Confederation Building en daarnaast Supreme Court of Canada. Tegenover het parlementsgebouw ligt het Langevin Block dat het kantoor van Minister President Justin Trudeau is.

Een van de leukste momenten in Ottawa was het ontdekken van een prachtig bronsen beeld van Oscar Peterson terwijl zijn muziek uit een paar boxen klinkt. Oscar Peterson (Montreal, 15 augustus 1925 - Toronto, 23 december 2007) was
een briljante jazzpianist. Oscar Peterson is een van de artiesten die mij mijn voorliefde van jazz hebben bijgebracht, mede omdat zijn muziek tijdens mijn jeugd vaak door mijn vader werd gedraaid.
Restaurant Tips:
Bistro Social, gelunchd bij Social en kan dit zeer aanbevelen, prima service en goed eten.
Restaurant / Winelounge Beckta, ik kan dit restaurant zeker adviseren voor een uitstekende maaltijd met leuke en goede service, ik koos voor de wijnbar omdat deze minder stijfjes overkwam.
Ottawa is absoluut een bezoekje waard, misschien niet zoals ik in de winter maar misschien wel in de zomer of herfst.
