As a result of a very successful winter holiday in Jasper last year, this time I’ve picked the East Coast of Canada
The provinces Quebec and Ontario are the main goal, but I’m also going make a side trip for a few days to New York State.
Start and finish will be in Montreal. The average temperature normally lies between -5 and -14, but it is absolutely colder than this, with -10 and -15 and feel-temperature of around -24.
So it’s understandable that the average Canadian does not feel like walking outside.
First stop: Montreal, QC - stay 3 nights at Hotel Place d'Armes in Old Montreal
Montreal with its nicknames: City of Saints or City of the Hundred Towers, was founded 375 years ago.

The city is one of controversy:
Downtown Montreal with its skyscrapers and underground city (Ville Souterraine)

Old Montreal with its many historic buildings, cobblestone streets and the old port in the St. Lawrence River.

Montreal is a nice city to spend a few days. If you stay 3 nights you have 2 full days to discover Montreal but you still see only a small part of this nice city.
Montreal is one of the most energetic cities in Québec and especially Old Montreal with its history, picturesque squares, architecture, art galleries and many restaurants.
In the high season, summer, it’s loaded with tourists who wander through these streets and enjoy the street artists on Place Jacques-Cartier.
During this visit it’s quiet because the Canadians take a break in January and February after a busy December month. And yet there are enough activities during this period, such as the Igloofest of 18 Jan. until 3 febr. 2018
But in order to lure the Canadians to the restaurants, several restaurants in Old Montreal introduce a menu (Table d'Hôte) with reduced prices for a 3 course meal.
This in the period from 11 January to 4 February 2018 and this year is already the 11th time and is known as Happening Gourmand.

Absolute musts are:
- Mont Royal was formed about 125 million years ago by an intrusion: a flow of magma that rose in the earth's crust. This magma has not reached the earth's surface, but has solidified in the depth. The hill that is now visible was created because glaciers have eroded the surrounding landscape. The southeast half of the Mont Royal has been a park since 1876, and as such it is a popular destination for both tourists and residents of Montreal. The park was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, who also designed the Central Park in New York.The park is popular with young and old and the road through the park is a magnet for motorists, motorcyclists and cyclists. You can make beautiful walks here but the hike from the bottom to the top is pretty strenuous . There is also a pond with restaurant where you can skate in the winter, the Smit House and Chalet Mont Royal. The two cemeteries that are located here are impressive. But the biggest feature of the hill is the 31 meter high cross that stands on top and is illuminated at night. Mont Royal Park, a great snow festival in winter and a beautiful park in summer.

- Old Montreal with its church Basilique Notre Dame with its beautiful altar. The Basilica Our Lady of Montreal (French Basilique Notre-Dame de Montréal) is located in Vieux-Montreal, the historic center of the Canadian city of Montreal, Quebec. The neo-Gothic church building is the mother church of Montreal and in the years 1824 to 1829 replaced an older eponymous parish church.

- Place Jacques Cartier, a square in Old Montreal and entrance to the Old Port of Montreal. At the high end of the square you’ll find the statue of Nelson and Hotel de Ville (City Hall) and Chateau Ramezay the historic museum of Montreal. Now during the winter pretty quiet but in the summer/autumn pretty crowded and a lot of street artists.

- Old Port of Montreal. Offers Quai de L’ Horloge (Clocktower Quay), which is a beach during the summer, La Grande Roue de Montréal (Ferris Wheel) for an unforgettable experience and currently an ice rink. From the ferris wheel you have a panoramic view, from 60 meters high, of the river, Old Montreal, downtown and the mountains! Especially cool in the evening with all the city lights. The gondolas are heated in the winter and air-conditioned in the summer. Costs C$ 25 for adults ex tax. There is also an Indoor-playground, Zipline and a playground with ships and climbing ropes for childern.

- Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours (Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours Chapel), this chapel lies across the Old Port and next to the Marché Bonsecours and is one of the oldest churches in Montreal, it was built in 1771 over the ruins of an earlier chapel. The Marché Bonsecour is a kind of covered market with some restaurants, tourist shops and art galleries. I was not really impressed by it.

- James McGill & James McGill University. James McGill (October 6, 1744 – December 19, 1813) was a Scottish businessman and philanthropist best known for being the founder of McGill University, Montreal. McGill University is a coeducational public research university in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. It was established in 1821 by royal charter, granted by King George IV. The University bears the name of James McGill, a Montreal merchant originally from Scotland whose bequest in 1813 formed the university's precursor, McGill College.

- The Underground City in Downtown Montreal with its many shops, hotels and offices. Not really my kind of cookie, as I find it too crowdy and too many people rushing around and some cross-points are pretty narrow,
- The Art Museum: Montreal Museum in Montreal, Old Montreal,
- You can also visit the islands Île Saint Hélène and Île Notre Dame.

In navolging van een zeer geslaagde wintervakantie in Jasper vorig jaar, dan nu de Oostkust.
De staten Quebec en Ontario zijn het hoofddoel maar ik maak ook een uitstapje van een paar dagen naar New York State.
Beginnen en eindige doe ik in Montreal. De gemiddelde temperatuur ligt normaal gesproken zo tussen de -5 en de -14 maar het is hier absoluut kouder dan deze gemiddelde temperatuur met zijn -10 en -15 en gevoelstemperaturen van rond de -24. Het is ook dan wel te begrijpen dat de gemiddelde Canadees niet veel zin heeft om buiten te lopen.

Old Montreal met zijn vele historische gebouwen, keitjes straten en de oude haven in de St. Lawrence Rivier.
Montreal is een fijne stad om een paar dagen door te brengen. Als je er 3 nachten verblijft dan heb je 2 volle dagen om Montreal te ontdekken maar dan nog zie je maar een klein deel van deze leuke stad.
Montreal is een van de energiekste steden in Québec en voor mij vooral Old Montreal met zijn geschiedenis, pittoreske pleintjes, architectuur, kunstgaleries en de vele restaurantjes.
Het stikt hier in het hoogseizoen van de toeristen die door deze straatjes dwalen en genieten van de straatartiesten op Place Jacques-Cartier.
Tijdens dit bezoek is het rustig want de Canadezen doen het, na een drukke december maand, rustig aan in januari en februari. En toch vinden er in deze periode genoeg activiteiten plaats zoals het Igloofest van 18 jan. tot 3 febr. 2018
Maar om de Canadezen toch naar de restaurants te lokken, introduceren diverse restaurants in Old Montreal een menu (Table d’Hôte) met gereduceerde tarieven.
Dit in de periode van 11 januari t/m 4 februari 2018 en het is dit jaar inmiddels alweer de 11e keer dat deze gehouden wordt en staat bekend als Happening Gourmand.
De restaurants die wij bezochten zijn:
Je mag zeker niet overslaan:
- Mont Royal werd ongeveer 125 miljoen jaar geleden gevormd door een intrusie: een stroom magma die in de aardkorst opsteeg. Deze magma heeft het aardoppervlak niet bereikt, maar is in de diepte gestold. De heuvel die nu zichtbaar is, is ontstaan doordat gletsjers het omliggende landschap hebben geërodeerd. De zuidoostelijke helft van de Mont Royal is sinds 1876 een park, en als zodanig een populaire bestemming voor zowel toeristen als bewoners van Montréal Het park is ontworpen door Frederick Law Olmsted, die ook het Central Park in New York vormgaf. Het park is geliefd bij jong en oud en de weg door het park is een trekpleister voor automobilisten, motorrijders en fietsers. Je kan hier mooie wandelingen maken, maar de wandeling vanaf de voet naar boven is behoorlijk pittig.. Er bevinden zich verder een vijver met restaurant waar je nu kunt schaatsen, het Smit Huis en Chalet Mont Royal. De twee begraafplaatsen die hier liggen zijn indrukwekkend groot. Maar het grootste kenmerk van de heuvel is het 31 meter hoge kruis dat op de top staat en ’s avonds verlicht is.
- Old Montréal met Basiliek Onze Lieve Vrouw van Montreal (Frans Basilique Notre-Dame de Montréal) is gelegen in Vieux-Montréal, het historische centrum van de Canadese stad Montréal Quebec. Het neogotische kerkgebouw is de moederkerk van Montréal en verving in de jaren 1824 tot 1829 een oudere gelijknamige parochiekerk.
- Place Jacques Cartier, een plein in het oude Montreal en toegang tot de oude haven van Montreal. Aan het hoge einde van het plein vind je het standbeeld van Nelson(1808), Hotel de Ville (Gemeentehuis) en Chateau Ramezay, het historische museum van Montréal Nu in de winter is het hier behoorlijk stil maar in de zomer / herfst behoorlijk druk en veel straatartiesten.
- Old Port of Montréal: biedt de Quai de L 'Horloge (Clocktower Quay), nu gesloten maar in de zomer een strand, en La Grande Roue de Montréal (reuzenrad) voor een onvergetelijke ervaring en momenteel een ijsbaan. Vanaf het reuzenrad heb je een panoramisch uitzicht, vanaf 60 meter hoog, over de St. Lawrence rivier, het oude Montréal downtown en de bergen! Vooral indrukwekkend ‘s avond met alle stadslichten. De gondels wordt in de winter verwarmd en in de zomer van airconditioning voorzien. Kosten C $ 25 voor volwassenen ex tax. Er is ook een indoor speeltuin, een zipline en een speeltuin met schepen en klimtouwen voor kinderen.
- Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours, deze kapel ligt tegenover de oude haven en naast de Marché Bonsecours en is een van de oudste kerken in Montréal, het werd gebouwd in 1771 op de ruïnes van een eerdere kapel. De Marché Bonsecours is een soort van overdekte markt met een aantal restaurants, toeristische winkels en kunstgalerien. Ik was er niet echt van onder de indruk.
- James McGill & James McGill University. James McGill (6 oktober 1744 - 19 december 1813) was een Schotse zakenman en een filantroop, vooral bekend als de oprichter van McGill University, Montreal. McGill University is een coöperatieve openbare onderzoeksuniversiteit in Montreal, Canada. Het werd opgericht in 1821 door koninklijk handvest, verleend door Koning George IV. De universiteit draagt de naam van James McGill, een koopman uit Montreal, oorspronkelijk afkomstig uit Schotland, wiens legaat in 1813 de voorloper van de universiteit vormde, McGill College.
- De Ondergrondse Stad in Downtown Montreal met zijn vele winkels, hotels en kantoren. Ikzelf vond het niet prettige, teveel rennende mensen en soms kleine gangetjes, Zeker niet geschikt voor mensen die glaustrofobisch zijn aangelegd.
- Het Kunstmuseum: Musée des Beaux-Arts de Montreal in Old Montreal
- Je kunt ook een bezoek brengen aan de eilanden Île Saint Hélène en Île Notre Dame.
